A BIT OF HISTORY...

The castle of Bois-Luzy was build in 1861 by Charles-Guillaume Bazin, a pioneer in steam navigation in Marseille, who originally purchased it from the local historian Louis-Antoine de Ruffi in 1856. The story tells that the castle’s name Bois Luzy is believed to derive from Charles Bazin spouse’s name Louise, affectingly named “Luzy”, whereas the French “bois” stands for “wood”.

In 1872, Earl Saint-Allary acquired the manor and surrounding territories extending it up to 26 ha. The lower lands hosted a vast green meadow  nourished by the canal of Marseille, and the upper lands were particularly appreciated for their hunting treasures hidden in the Luzy pinewood. From this period on, beautiful vineyard and farm spread around the lands.

It is worth noticing the refine mosaic floor in the entrance hall, which is very much the gem of the castle, was commissioned by Earl Saint-Allary. Endowed with pronounced aesthetic taste,  he entrusted this masterpiece of Italian tiling to the same team of expert tilesetters who realized the splendid floor of the Notre Dame de la Garde cathedral in the heart of Marseille.

As time went on, the castle was purchased by the city government in 1926. Since then, it has been turned into a lovely youth hostel run by the Fuaj association member of Hostelling International, which opens its doors to young people coming from abroad to see the south of France.

It is here in this place steeped with history and refined charm, that we are pleased to welcome you for a wonderful tango weekend!
